Oracle changed its cloud strategy in 2020. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform dominate the public cloud market, with 60% of the total market share, but Oracle is still in the fray. The company takes a different approach to attracting customers, pitching its Oracle Cloud Gen 2 cloud offerings around lower processing, storage and memory costs (cost optimization), focused on cross-sell to its current and local user base.
Combined with stronger SLAs and more manageability, performance and availability, Oracle boasts that its lower costs attract companies that squeezed their budgets in 2020.
According to Larry Ellison, founder and president of Oracle, users who moved from AWS to Oracle's IaaS GEN2, IaaS Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), could see savings of more than 50%.
Oracle's OCI is built to target the migration to the on-premises applications and databases of its users, in most cases, already Oracle customers or private data center customers. A different approach from major providers. Amazon, Microsoft and Google clouds are designed for Lift and Shift models and mainly for new fisrt cloud architectures.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure OCI Speech Focused on Cost and Security
Oracle still lags far behind cloud biggies like AWS, Microsoft and Google in IaaS, but the company is trying to attract existing customers with a triple message centered on competitive pricing, advanced security, and greater assurances about availability, performance and manageability.
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is the company's second IaaS offering. His first attempt, known as OCI Classic, was based on OpenStack and failed to gain much interest. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure OCI Gen 2 introduced many technical advances over Classic.
Unlike rival platforms, OCI offers customers not only availability service level agreements (SLAs), but also SLAs for performance and management.
Last year, Oracle Founder and President Larry Ellison said customers who moved their Oracle database workloads from AWS to OCI would save at least 50% on their bills. The same is generally true for services performed at the OCI, said Screven, who reports directly to Ellison.
Of course, attracting customers from the base and with better costs is critical if Oracle is to gain market share against AWS, Microsoft and Google in IaaS. To do this, a new Oracle customer always takes into account the company's cost-cutting capabilities.
Aggressive pricing also follows a pattern that Microsoft engaged as it built Azure. That's how they took off the Microsoft Azure platform. As a new entrant to this hectic cloud market, Oracle can follow suit.
Oracle focuses sales on the installed base
Oracle's executive team doesn't believe it's in the same game as AWS, Azure and Google, seeking appeal from a broad cross section of IT buyers. Instead, it positioned OCI as a migration target for its customers' on-premises databases and applications.
Oracle's customers include many in highly regulated and conservative industries. So it's not surprising that your OCI Gen 2 tone has a strong emphasis on safety. In September 2019, Oracle launched Cloud Guard and Maximum Security Zones (Oracle Cloud Maximum Security), services that Oracle launched at OpenWorld.
Cloud Guard monitors customer incidents and determines if they are in a weakened security state or under attack. Then the system changes the settings to fend off the attack. Oracle Cloud Maximum Security Zones provide customers with a completely restricted and locked-down environment by default to prevent configuration-related data leaks. Many such incidents have been linked to misconfigured AWS S3 storage.
One of the important design points for the Gen 2 cloud was being able to bring traditional workloads, including [E-Business Suite], to the cloud.
Some customers already self-manage their EBS installations at OCI, while others use managed services from Oracle.
