Organizing data and processes for efficient hardware asset management

To improve hardware asset governance in a complex and dynamic environment, the company sought to structure HAM (Hardware Asset Management) processes, align the CMDB with best practices and implement CSDM. With support from 4Matt, the project aimed to establish governance, automation and reliability in information on physical assets and their relationships.

Challenges and objectives

The company faced difficulties in maintaining traceability of hardware assets and low reliability of CMDB data. In addition, there was no formal adherence to the CSDM (Common Service Data Model), making it difficult to standardize and integrate IT processes and tools.

The 4MATT project had the following objectives:

  1. Implement HAM practices with traceability and governance.

  2. Organize and clean CMDB data.

  3. Structure the CSDM domains and relationships.

  4. Ensure compliance, visibility and support for service management.

“The structuring of the CMDB based on the CSDM was a turning point for our environment. 4MATT brought clarity, methodology and agility.”

Obstacles and metrics

The main obstacles included the lack of clear inventory processes, duplication of records and lack of visibility between IT teams. 4MATT used a collaborative approach with iterative deliveries, promoting continuous alignment with the areas involved.

The results were expressive:

  1. +96% HAM coverage.
  2. 90% accuracy in CMDB.
  3. 100% adherence to CSDM, consolidating a reliable basis for management and automation.

Customizations and Adaptations

During the project, the 4MATT team customized dashboards, integrated external data sources, and organized service catalogs according to the CSDM model. Continuous governance processes and database health indicators were created.

Lesson learned and impact

The main lesson was the importance of integrating HAM practices and the CSDM pillars to ensure that the CMDB reflects the reality of the IT environment and is useful for decision-making, audits and automation.

The impact goes beyond the numbers: the project prepared the company for more strategic asset management, with continuous governance and real efficiency gains.
