Access to factory grounds involves hazardous situations requiring the use of PPE: escape masks, safety boots, and protection against chemical agents. Inventory planning should include prior coordination with operational safety teams to ensure safe access to all plant areas.

In prospecting for assets in a manufacturing environment, it is common to find machines in poor condition — corroded cables, dusty equipment, and no preventive maintenance for years. Devices in this situation are more difficult to locate and catalog, and are frequently not listed in any existing IT records.

4. Lack of knowledge about the sectors

The local IT team often doesn't know the entire factory layout. Basic information—such as the number of machines in a given sector, how to get to specific areas, or who is responsible for the area—isn't always available. Gathering information in person becomes, quite literally, an expedition.

5. Access rules and restrictions

In critical operational environments, gaining access to perform inventory requires an approval process that can be lengthy, depending on the company's hierarchy. In 4MATT projects, it was necessary to obtain approval from four different people to inventory a single computer in highly restricted areas.

6. Adverse factory environment

Intense noise, high temperatures, and simultaneous risky operations are constant characteristics of the factory environment. Inventory teams need to operate with heightened attention, without compromising the quality and integrity of the data collected in the field.

7. Fragmented communication between departments

Some factory sectors are not aligned with ongoing company projects. When proposing to inventory devices, initial resistance is common. Nothing that a consultative approach and good stakeholder management can't resolve—but it's a challenge that needs to be anticipated in project planning.
