ITAM & CMDB Journey - Webinar I: Beginning of the Journey

On April 29, 2025, 4MATT kicked off its "ITAM & CMDB Journey" series of meetings with an introductory webinar that brought together more than 150 IT professionals from across Brazil. With a peak audience of over 110 participants lasting over an hour, the event highlighted the importance of integrating corporate strategy, ITAM (IT Asset Management), and CMDB (Configuration Management Database) as essential pillars for technology governance and operational excellence.

Led by Ellen Ferro, Head of ITAM at 4MATT, and Israel Nicolau, Head of Pre-Sales, the webinar provided a structured and accessible conversation aimed at managers and analysts working directly with ServiceNow and asset and configuration management practices.

The agenda included a strategic vision of the role of ITAM and CMDB in supporting smarter business decisions, as well as an interactive question and answer session with the audience.

Jornada ITAM & CMDB

"How ITAM, CMDB, and Artificial Intelligence Connect to Modern IT Strategy", according to Ellen Ferro

During the webinar, Ellen Ferro, Head of ITAM at 4MATT, began her presentation by highlighting the importance of aligning IT strategy with business strategy. According to her, in order to define business strategy and IT strategy, the company's objectives are guided by the client portfolio, the target market and the products and services that will be offered. From this, it is possible to understand which projects and programs need to be developed internally to support this portfolio. This vision reinforces the central role of IT as a strategic pillar of modern organizations.

Ellen then highlighted how ITAM (IT Asset Management) and CMDB (Configuration Management Database) directly impact the efficiency and security of IT management. "Where do ITAM and CMDB most impact my day-to-day operations at the company? The first point, and one that's almost unanimous, is security. When ITAM and CMDB are well-structured, they strengthen IT security, compliance, and stability. Having a detailed inventory and a CMDB that maps not only individual configuration items but also their relationships with services and processes helps prevent data leaks and ensure organizational compliance."

When answering an audience question about the relationship between ITIL and CMDB, Ellen reinforced the importance of best practices for properly structuring configuration management: "Many people define the CMDB as the repository of everything—both assets and configuration items. But it's important to remember that, according to ITIL, there is the practice of 'Service Configuration Management.' This practice defines the configuration system the organization needs, considering all platforms and integrations. The CMDB, in this context, is an object of this practice. In other words, the vision we have today of the CMDB as part of configuration management comes directly from ITIL."

Closing the online meeting, Ellen pointed out that AI is already a reality in the market: artificial intelligence is being used to automate repetitive tasks in the CMDB. AI tools are currently being applied to perform predictive analyses, such as identifying the frequency of incidents on specific servers. Based on this data, it is possible to automatically open a problem to investigate the causes and take preventive actions. This brings more intelligence and agility to asset and incident management.
